Too Hot to Trot

We're already having record temps in Austin this May! I worked in a vet before starting The Mindful Pet in 2016, and I saw so many pitiful pups coming in with heat exhaustion and blistered feet after unaware owners took them for walks in extreme heat, on hot concrete and pavement. People tend to think that thick pads are indestructable and don't have much feeling, but this is far from the truth. They can and will burn very quickly, and the recovery process is painful and pretty tricky when trying to get a pup to stay off of them. As for heat exhaustion, this also happens quickly and can be life-threatening. Signs may include heavy breathing, excessive panting, slow walking, or a need to lay down. It's imperative that you stop the walk and get them home or to a vet immediately.
Here at The Mindful Pet we take extra care during our walks and we're passing along some tips: As temperatures rise, check the weather and plan walks in the earlier mornings and later evenings. If possible, choose a grassy, shaded route. And stay close to home so you can head right back in if pups show signs of heat exhaustion. Make sure to have plenty of water during and after, both of you! Spread the word and have a happy, safe summer, everyone!
